Setting Goals That Truly Matter

When we sit down to establish our goals and objectives, it’s natural to feel a surge of motivation. We see ahead of us a fresh slate, an invitation to set goals and dreams that energise and propel us forward. However, as the weeks go by and life’s demands pile up, even the most well-intentioned goals can lose their lustre. How do we make our aspirations stick? The answer lies in uncovering the “why” behind them.

Why Your “Why” Matters

Goals aren’t just about checking off milestones; they’re about creating meaningful progress in areas that resonate with us deeply. Research highlights the importance of intrinsic motivation (the drive that comes from our values) in achieving long-term success.

So, before you finalise your goals for the year, the quarter, or even this week, take a moment to reflect. Ask yourself:

  • What is my true motivation for this goal?

  • How does this goal align with my values?

  • How will achieving this goal enrich my life or the lives of others?

Your answers might surprise you. Does your desire to stay fit stem from wanting to keep up with your energetic kids? Or maybe your ambition to learn a new language is fueled by dreams of relocating to a country that’s always inspired you. When you connect your goals to a deeper purpose, they become more than tasks on a to-do list—they become part of your identity.

Staying Grounded Through Challenges

Life is full of twists and turns. Inevitably, there will be moments when progress feels slow, motivation wanes, or obstacles appear insurmountable. During these times, reconnecting with your “why” can provide the resilience needed to stay the course.

Consider this advice from Simon Sinek, author of Start With Why: “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.” By anchoring your goals in passion, you’re better equipped to navigate life’s inevitable hurdles.

How to Dig Into Your “Why”

Here are three actionable steps to ensure your goals have purpose:

  1. Write It Down: Start a vision board and dedicate an area to each goal. Beneath each one, jot down why it matters to you. Keep this in a visible area to stay inspired (if vision boards aren’t your thing you can journal too!)

  2. Share Your Why: Discuss your goals and their motivations with friends, family, or the SAOL community. Talking about your “why” reinforces its importance and creates accountability.

  3. Visualise the Impact: Imagine how achieving your goal will positively affect your life. Add this to your vision board or create a mental picture to remind yourself of the bigger picture.
